HOUSE ON HILL

Building a home on a sloped section is often an idea that is rejected by many builders. This is understandable due to the inevitable complexities, however, with the right team and knowledge it is absolutely possible and with the increase in subdivisions, more sloped sections are being seen to meet the housing demand. 

When approached by a local Tauranga family that hoped to utilise the extra (sloping) land on their property, we were excited to take on the challenge. The family wanted to use the slope to their advantage in creating a home that appeared out of the box - while still remaining budget-friendly. 

There began our ‘House on the Hill’ project. 

After passing the initial formalities like section surveys and architectural planning we got right into it. With an interest in getting involved, the owner took care of the retaining and earth-works before we started setting out the house. Challenges were then immediately faced with tight access to bring in building supplies from the driveway, instigating the first major compromise. 

Especially in sloped builds, compromising is something we must be prepared for. For us, that meant building the frames on-site as there wasn’t a way the truck could get the frames to the section. However, in spite of the challenges, Bespoke Constuct got the job done and created a home that not only the team is proud of but the family is happy with.

WHAKATANE HOUSE

Overview — Clients were looking to approach a small builder after past experiences building with housing companies. They liked Alex from day one with his open and honest approach to the build. They purchased a section in Whakatane with sea views hoping to build their forever home. They wanted an architectural looking house with a cladding that had easy maintenance.

 

The challenges — Also building on a section with a slope. Having to step the garage down to make the house work. Engineered foundations and block walls.

 

The approach — This build is currently underway.

 

Project suppliers — Tiled bathrooms, polished concrete (salt and pepper finish) Architectural coloursteel cladding.
