OUTDOOR LIVING

Outdoor Living and Decking in Tauranga

Tauranga's climate rewards homes that open up to the outdoors. Bespoke Construct designs and builds decks, covered outdoor rooms, louvre roofs and alfresco kitchens that work as a natural extension of the house rather than an afterthought bolted onto it. Every outdoor space we build is planned around sun, wind, shelter, privacy and the way people actually move between the kitchen, the living room and the garden.

Decks That Connect the House to the Garden

A good deck starts inside. We look at where the living areas are, where the sun is at the times you will use the space, and how the levels between floor and ground can be managed so the transition is seamless. On sloping Tauranga sections that often means an elevated deck with stairs and landscaping that turn a difficult drop into a feature.

We build in hardwood, thermally modified timber and composite decking, with stainless fixings and detailing suited to a coastal environment. Balustrades, privacy screens, built-in seating and lighting are designed in from the start so the finished deck looks like part of the house.

Where a deck is part of a larger project we coordinate it with the interior work, so the flooring levels, glazing and thresholds all line up.

Covered Outdoor Rooms and Louvre Roofs

An open deck is used for a few months of the year. A covered outdoor room is used for most of it. Adjustable louvre roofs, fixed roofs with skylights, retractable screens and outdoor fireplaces let you sit outside in a Bay of Plenty summer downpour or on a cool autumn evening.

We design the structure to suit the house, whether that means extending the roofline, building a freestanding pavilion or creating a courtyard between two wings. Because we are builders rather than a louvre retailer, we can integrate the roof, walls, glazing, heating and services properly instead of fitting a kit around whatever is there.

The result is an outdoor room that feels like part of the architecture of the home.

Alfresco Kitchens and Dining

Built-in barbecues, outdoor kitchens with sinks and refrigeration, and dining areas sized for the whole family. We plan gas, water, power and drainage early so the finished space is practical as well as good looking.

Making the Most of Views

Harbour, ocean and Kaimai views are why people live here. We position decks and outdoor rooms to capture them, with glass balustrades, careful roof heights and sightlines planned from inside the house as well as out.

Outdoor Living as Part of a Renovation

Most of our outdoor projects are part of a larger home renovation. Opening up the back of the house, relocating the kitchen and adding a covered deck at the same time gives a far better result than doing them separately.

Built for Tauranga's Sun, Wind and Salt

Outdoor structures take more weather than any other part of a house. We choose materials and finishes that last in a coastal environment: durable timbers or composites, stainless steel fixings, powder-coated aluminium, and coatings that can handle strong UV. Roofs and gutters are sized for heavy rain, and we design around the prevailing wind so the space is usable on more days of the year.

Larger decks, roofs and any structure attached to the house usually need building consent. We advise on what applies and manage the application as part of the project.

Why Choose Bespoke Construct for Outdoor Living in Tauranga

Outdoor spaces are where a home's design either comes together or falls apart. Bespoke Construct builds them with the same care as the interior: accurate setout, clean junctions between the house and the new structure, and finishes that hold up. Alex leads every project personally, so the person who designed the detail with you is the person checking it on site.

Clients choose us for direct communication, tidy sites, honest timelines and clear cost tracking through Buildertrend. Our workmanship was recognised at the 2025 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards with a Regional Gold Award and a place in the national Top 100.

How an Outdoor Living Project Works

It starts with a free onsite consultation. We look at the house, the section, the sun and the views, and talk about how you want to use the space. From there we can sketch options ourselves for straightforward projects, or work with your architect or designer for larger ones.

Once the design is agreed we price the work in detail, arrange consent where it is needed, and build to a clear programme. Follow our six step process from first contact to handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need consent for a deck in Tauranga?

Decks less than 1.5 metres above ground are usually exempt from building consent, but anything higher, any roof structure attached to the house and most outdoor rooms need consent from Tauranga City Council. We check what applies to your project and manage the application.

What decking material is best for a coastal home?

It depends on the look you want and how much maintenance you are happy to do. Hardwoods and thermally modified timbers look natural and age well with care; composite decking needs less upkeep. All of them need stainless fixings near the coast. We will talk you through the options.

Can you add a louvre roof to an existing deck?

Often, yes, provided the existing deck structure can carry the extra load and the connection to the house can be detailed properly. We assess the existing structure first and tell you honestly whether it is a sound base.

Do you build outdoor living spaces on their own, or only as part of renovations?

Both. Many of our outdoor projects are part of a larger renovation, but we also take on standalone decks and outdoor rooms where the project is substantial enough to warrant our involvement.

How long does an outdoor living project take?

A deck or covered outdoor room typically takes four to ten weeks on site once consent is in place, depending on size and complexity. Consent itself usually takes several weeks, so allow for that in your planning.
